During the past 40 years, acupuncture has become more and more popular, evolving into one of the most utilized forms of complementary integrative medicine interventions in the United States. In fact, more than 10 million acupuncture treatments are administered annually in the United States alone. Its rise in popularity, particularly in the West, can be attributed in part to its effectiveness for pain relief and in part to the fact that scientific studies have begun to prove its efficacy. 1

Acupuncture is a medical technique developed in China thousands of years ago. Despite only recently gaining popularity in the United States, it is one of the most common medical techniques in the world. Acupuncture is an effective treatment for not only pain, but also conditions such as: insomnia, stress, anxiety, neuropathy, and more. Treatments consist of needles, about the size of a cat’s whisker, being inserted into points on your hands, arms, feet, legs, torso and head. We specifically choose each point based on the response it causes within the body. This specialized treatment method is safe and effective when performed by a board certified acupuncture physician.

In some cases, we find that acupuncture alone isn’t strong enough to resolve severe pain. When that happens, we attach special cords to the needles. We then plug these cords into a machine commonly called e-stim, the needle brings an electric pulse deep into the muscle. This method is extremely effective for painful conditions.

The Science Behind Acupuncture:

  • Reduces inflammation both at the site of the needles, as well as through the entire body.
  • Improves blood flow in the areas treated, as evidenced by doppler ultrasound
  • Has a calming effect on the areas of the brain that transmit pain signals.
  • Reduces swelling, shown in thermal imaging scans of the areas treated.
  • Boosts nerve impulses in the brain in areas responsible for recovery.
  • Scientists have found that many of the points correspond to nerve bundles or muscle trigger points.

The World Health Organization (WHO) considers acupuncture safe and effective for more than 100 medical conditions. At Axis Natural Medicine, we regularly treat the following conditions:
